Stuttgart / Munich / September 27, 2021 – The further electrification of highways for battery electric commercial vehicles was brought on the road on 27.09.2021 by a successful kick-off of the project « High Power Charging in Long Distance Truck Transport » (acronym: HoLa). Here, P3 takes over the project management in this important interface topic and leads an interdisciplinary consortium of 13 funded partners and 6 additional associated partners. The project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (BMVI), was presented as one of three innovation clusters for climate-friendly truck drive technologies.

Specifically, HoLa focuses on the development and operation of charging infrastructure for heavy commercial vehicles in long-distance applications at four locations along the A2 motorway between the Ruhr region and Berlin. A total of up to eight charging points are to be set up in a first phase with the currently standardized CCS interface (Combined Charging System), before a power upgrade to MCS technology (Megawatt Charging System) takes place in the second phase. To accommodate and investigate different use cases, the charging infrastructure will be installed at two motorway service stations, as well as two logistics centers with connections to the A2.

Markus Hackmann, Managing Director and responsible for electric mobility topics at P3, is looking forward to a trend-setting project on the way to emission-free mobility: « As P3, we are very pleased to have brought this project, which is valuable for society, from the idea to the successful funding decision in record time together with the BMVI, NOW, VDA and the Fraunhofer Institute. The MCS technology could be a real game changer for the electrification of commercial vehicles. We are excited to have the opportunity to work with all partners on this project. »
The cross-industry consortium comprises a total of 19 well-known partners, including automotive and charging infrastructure manufacturers, energy suppliers and research institutes.

The project runs from September 2021 to the end of 2024 and is intended to serve as a blueprint for the efforts of the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure (NLL) to drive forward the nationwide expansion of charging infrastructure for commercial vehicles. With a total budget of 27 million euros, the funding volume for HoLa amounts to a total of approximately 12 million euros.
