P3 Charging Index

The P3 Charging Index (P3CI) was developed to make the actual charging speed of electric vehicles comparable. Instead of the usual comparisons of charging power in kilowatts (kW), the P3CI uses the vehicles’ consumption data and charging curves to depict the time they take to re-charge range in kilometers.
P3-Charging Index - Berechnung
P3 Charging Index’s ideal value of 1.0 represents the ability of e-vehicles to recharge 300 kilometers of actual range within 20 minutes. In our opinion, this would provide customers with satisfactory long-distance mobility.

Data Collection

In order to achieve the best results, P3 records all charging curves shown in the Charging Index. As far as possible, all vehicles are tested under same conditions and charged at charging stations of the same manufacturer. Only Tesla vehicles are charged at Tesla charging stations, as they are known to reach their maximum charging performance only there.

The P3CI considers the charging window between 10 and 80 percent State of Charge (SoC). This is also the range, in which manufacturer usually specify their charging times and which represents the best possible charging conditions, in our opinion.
Since the official maximum charging performance, according to the manufacturers, is only achieved for a few minutes in each charging session, the P3CI additionally shows the average charging power for comparison.

The P3CI uses the vehicles’ consumption figures as determined by the ADAC Ecotest.

Categories

Since being invented by P3 in 2019, the P3CI has been closely aligned with the e-vehicle market. Many new EVs have entered the market over the last few years. To give a fair reflection of the current market, the number of vehicles in the P3CI has had to further increase year by year. Hence, in 2022 the vehicles were divided into three categories for the first time:

  • Luxury class (BAFA net list price from €65,000)
  • Premium class (BAFA net list price from >€35,000 to €65,000)
  • and Compact class (BAFA net list price up to €35,000)

Our Expertise

P3 has been intensively involved in electromobility in all its facets since 2006 – from the smallest cells and batteries to powertrain, charging infrastructure, grid integration, and industrialization. Over the years we have developed a deep understanding of the technologies, production and players, which we continue to expand every day.

The P3 Charging Index was developed to answer the key question of electric mobility: « How much time does a vehicle need to recharge range? » In our opinion, consumption and charging time play just as big a role as the charging power of e-vehicles.
